Au palais du Ciel

Xiuli, the narrator, was born in Harbin, a northern China city which offers the peculiarity of having hosted in the early twentieth century, thousands of Russian Jewish immigrants.

After a painful childhood alongside her widowed mother and two jealous sisters, Xiuli discovers before the death of her mother her true paternal origin.

In the context of a tormented China (the years after the Cultural Revolution), the child continues in adulthood to research the author of her days.

It is ultimately the love of a foreign visitor after a long solitude, which will give her the impetus and strength to complete her gasping personal and spiritual quest.
